"Laureates of the Seventh International Poster Biennale"
Warsaw, Poland - 1980

The opening reception of "The Laureates of the 7th International Poster Biennale" exhibition

In 1978, the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, probably the most prestigious event in graphic art worldwide, awarded Sawka with the gold medal for his work "La Voiture de l’Annee," which depicts a tank roaming the streets of a city. Behind this award, a dramatic political battle had taken place. At the time, Sawka was already in exile from Poland. Although this poster was rejected by the French Pompidou Center, it still made it as an entry to the Warsaw Biennale. A heated battle ensued among jury members and government representatives. Finally, the Japanese member of the jury, designer Shigeo Fukuda, threatened the Communist authorities, that he would break up the jury in protest of the government’s opposition and interference. Sawka won the medal.
